In most cases, yes.  Medicare covers home medical equipment (“HME”) such as home oxygen, wheelchairs, orthotic products, canes, home care beds and various other products when a patient has the medical need and a doctor writes a prescription.

HME is equipment that helps take care of your basic needs for certain medical conditions. Most HME coverage tends to be covered by Medicare Part B. In some cases, Part A will pay for the equipment during an inpatient stay.

There are 3 specific criteria that Medicare requires in order for a patient to be covered for HME:

  1. The equipment must provide durability so a patient can have multiple and long-term use.
  2. It must also provide appropriate therapeutic use in the home for the medical condition.
  3. It must be medically necessary as prescribed by a physician.
